First Foxconn-built BlackBerry is codenamed “Jakarta” – possibly out in March or April 2014

Earlier today, BlackBerry announced their Q3 fiscal 2014 earnings report. Within the report, BlackBerry announced they had entered a five year agreement with Foxconn.

“This partnership demonstrates BlackBerry’s commitment to the device market for the long-term and our determination to remain the innovation leader in secure end-to-end mobile solutions,” said John Chen, Executive Chair and CEO of BlackBerry. “Partnering with Foxconn allows BlackBerry to focus on what we do best – iconic design, world-class security, software development and enterprise mobility management – while simultaneously addressing fast-growing markets leveraging Foxconn’s scale and efficiency that will allow us to compete more effectively.”

During the earnings call, Chen revealed that the first BlackBerry and Foxconn smartphone would be releasing in Indonesia. It’s codename, you guessed it: Jakarta.

Chen says the entry level smartphone will be designed by Foxconn, and supported by BlackBerry 10. The Jakarta will be 3G-only and expected release date is as early as March 2014, or at least by April, says Chen.

3.2 Million BlackBerry 7 Smartphones Sold, Versus 1.1 Million BlackBerry 10

3.2 Million BlackBerry 7 Smartphones Sold, Versus 1.1 Million BlackBerry 10

The latest BlackBerry Q3 fiscal 2014 results have shown that BlackBerry 7 devices are still outselling BlackBerry 10 smartphones, and quite significantly.

“During the third quarter, the Company recognized hardware revenue on approximately 1.9 million BlackBerry smartphones compared to approximately 3.7 million BlackBerry smartphones in the previous quarter. Most of the units recognized were BlackBerry 7 devices. During the quarter, approximately 4.3 million BlackBerry smartphones were sold through to end customers, which included shipments made and recognized prior to the third quarter and which reduced the Company’s inventory in channel. Of the BlackBerry smartphones sold through to end customers in the third quarter, approximately 3.2 million were BlackBerry 7 devices.”

This is likely the reason BlackBerry has partnered with Foxconn to offer entry level smartphones in Indonesia and other markets.
