Alleged BlackBerry Z3 renders and specs surface!

Alleged BlackBerry Z3 renders and specs surface!

Today, N4BB posted some alleged renders of the Jakarta, which they say could hit the market has the BlackBerry Z3. Following that, BBin posted some rumored specs for the device, as follows:

  • Display – 5″ display, 540 x 960 pixels, 24-bit color LCD display
  • Memory – 8 GB application storage and 1.5 GB RAM
  • Processor – 1.2 GHz dual-core processor
  • Battery – 2650 mAh non-removable battery
  • Rear-facing camera: 5 MP Autofocus and flash, 5x digital zoom
  • Front-facing camera: 1.1 MP Fixed-focus, 3x digital zoom

With a phone like this, what matters more than specs is the price you can buy it at outright. We’ve seen low-cost Android handsets and even Nokia Lumia devices pick up a decent chunk of market share at this end of the market. A Z3 at a $150 or even up to $200 price point could be pretty darn compelling, and a great deal given the rumored 5″ display and BIG battery.

The chairman of Foxconn previously let it slip out that the device they’re working with BlackBerry to build could be unveiled at Mobile World Congress, which is just over a week away. Given the closeness to the event, we may not have to wait too long to find out whether these rumors are true or not.

One thing that is certain is that I will be making the trip to Barcelona for MWC. If anything gets announced or released, I’ll be on the ground to bring it back to you with a hands-on first look and plenty of details.

First Foxconn Built BlackBerry “Jakarta” could Debut At Mobile World Congress Next Month

Barcelona, Spain will be hosting Mobile World Congress 2014 next month, and BlackBerry could have a major appearance in the conference this year. According to Terry Gou, chairman of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co./Foxconn, their first ever made BlackBerry device will be debuting at MWC. BlackBerry has yet to confirm this, but Foxconn is apparently very excited about the launch.

“We are working with them to design a new device, and we will showcase multiple devices at the trade show in Barcelona in February,” said Gou at his charity event in Taipei in reference to BlackBerry and MWC.

John Chen had already mentioned a lot about this first Foxconn BlackBerry device. We know it’ll be an all touch device, and BlackBerry is aiming to have it make hit their target markets between March, and April, so having it debut or at least be shown off at the end of February at MWC is not too crazy. Gou also mentioned showcasing “multiple devices” which may or may not apply to BlackBerry, and could just be a reference to a specific number of Foxconn-made phones, but for other OEMs.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen have release some info on the first Foxconn-made BlackBerry device during the company’s last earnings call, codenamed Jakarta, and now rumors are starting up about what this device may end up looking like. We know it’s going to be aimed at emerging markets and will hopefully at an affordable price. Many were sure this next BlackBerry would be the typical QWERTY-keyboard style, but according to a report from BGR, this may not be the case.

BGR’s sources have indicated to them that the BlackBerry “Jakarta” will be an all-touch device. No word as to why BlackBerry will reportedly be launching a touchscreen-only device, but we’re sure that more information will be making its way out into the public in the coming weeks.

The BlackBerry codename Jakarta is slated to be launched in emerging markets between April and May of 2014.

BlackBerry SEC filings confirm two BlackBerry 10 devices dropped

BlackBerry SEC filings confirm two BlackBerry 10 devices dropped

WSJ reported that two low cost BlackBerry device have been canceled. This is not a surprise since BlackBerry have signed a 5 year contract with Foxconn to develope low cost devices for the market. BlackBerry and Foxconn are working on the low-cost ‘Jakarta’ device and preparing it release in March or April 2014.

The two devices in question were better know as the Café and Kopi series. The devices were designed to be low-cost offerings coming in two form factors, QWERTY and Full Touch with Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 variations powering them. Although the report states they were destined for emerging markets, there’s enough information available to say at least one variation was, at some point, destined for Verizon, Sprint and AT&T.

First Foxconn-built BlackBerry is codenamed “Jakarta” – possibly out in March or April 2014

Earlier today, BlackBerry announced their Q3 fiscal 2014 earnings report. Within the report, BlackBerry announced they had entered a five year agreement with Foxconn.

“This partnership demonstrates BlackBerry’s commitment to the device market for the long-term and our determination to remain the innovation leader in secure end-to-end mobile solutions,” said John Chen, Executive Chair and CEO of BlackBerry. “Partnering with Foxconn allows BlackBerry to focus on what we do best – iconic design, world-class security, software development and enterprise mobility management – while simultaneously addressing fast-growing markets leveraging Foxconn’s scale and efficiency that will allow us to compete more effectively.”

During the earnings call, Chen revealed that the first BlackBerry and Foxconn smartphone would be releasing in Indonesia. It’s codename, you guessed it: Jakarta.

Chen says the entry level smartphone will be designed by Foxconn, and supported by BlackBerry 10. The Jakarta will be 3G-only and expected release date is as early as March 2014, or at least by April, says Chen.
